The team of speech pathologists at Melvin Speech Pathology have extensive experience working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, including children with Aspergers Syndrome.
The clinic offers a comprehensive range of services, from the initial assessment, through to therapy and group activities for both children and parents.
The initial Autism Diagnostic assessment is usually undertaken as part of a team assessment. The assessment process is typically managed by a paediatrician and includes separate assessments undertaken by a speech pathologist and psychologist.
Speech pathologists formally assess a child’s language skills, including: understanding, expressive language skills and their social use of language (ie pragmatic language skills). Information is gathered from the child’s family, other relevant professionals, including staff at childcare, preschool or school. This information assists with both the initial diagnostic work as well as ongoing team management.
Formal assessments may also identify the need for other professional input (eg Audiology, Occupation Therapy, etc) to help support a child’s individual learning needs.
A detailed formal assessment report is included as part of the initial autism assessment package provided by our speech pathologist.
Many children with a formal diagnosis require individual speech therapy, focusing on the facilitation of play and language skills, addressing specific language deficits and enhancing social skills.
The psychologists based at the clinic are invaluable as part of the assessment and management team, offering support and individual behavioural/learning strategies.
Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder may also benefit from involvement in Social Skills Groups run by the speech pathologists at the clinic. These groups are offered for children aged 4 – 12 years. Typically the groups run for 8 weeks during the school term and have a maximum of 6 children per group.
Information about the Social Skills Programs run at the clinic is avaiable here.
The clinic offers the Hanen More than Words parent training course. This evidence based program supports parents to assist their children’s communication in everyday situations, through techniques used with play, music and daily routines. The Hanen Centre outlines specific goals of the More than Words program as “improved two-way communication, more conventional ways of communicating, improved understanding of language and better skills in communicating for social purposes”.
During the program, parents have the opportunity to share their experiences and ideas, in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Information about the Hanen More Than Words program run at the clinic is available here.
All members of our team are registered as FaHCSIA Panel Providers. For families with FaHCSIA funding, it is therefore possible to access individual therapy services, group sessions and the Hanen Program and use FaHCSIA funding to cover costs. The clinic will manage all accounts and submit them to FaHCSIA for payment.
