Interaction Skills® - what we do
Children are assessed prior to the program commencing to determine their individual social learning needs. They are then placed in a group that is appropriate to their age and skill levels. Groups are usually limited to 4-6 participants.
The program is run over nine weeks during the school term. Week One is a training and information session for parents and provides information on homework expectations and ideas to facilitate new skills.
Groups then commence in Week Two and run for an hour each. Groups include the following structured activities designed to facilitate social skills:
- Conversation practice
- Role playing
- Social games
While children are enjoying the program, parents have the opportunity to meet over coffee.
At the end of each weekly program there is a 15 minute feedback session for parents while children are supervised in play. During weeks 7 and 8 of the program, one on one individual parent feedback is conducted, much like a parent teacher interview to discuss strengths, weaknesses and discuss a management plan.
At the completion of the nine week course, a written report is provided, including individual recommendations.
When is the Group Run?
Groups are usually run at 4:00pm until 5:15pm on weeknights, after school. The different levels (eg beginners, primary level 1) are usually run Monday to Thursday.
The actual day allocated for each group will vary per team, but details are usually available midway through the preceeding term. This allows parents time to organise other after school commitments well in advance.
